REALTOR® Membership FAQs

REALTOR® MEMBERSHIP FAQ'S

HOW AM I BILLED?

Renewal invoices are posted to your HAR member dashboard. It’s important that you keep your email address up-to-date with HAR so that you can receive updates about your invoice, as well as other important communications. If you are not seeing your invoice but are expecting one, please call us at 406-603-4793.

PRO TIP: If you do not see a billing tab on your dashboard you do not have an invoice.

WHY CAN'T I JUST PAY THE LOCAL DUES? WHY DO I ALSO HAVE TO PAY STATE AND NATIONAL DUES?

The REALTOR® membership is designed as a joint three-part membership between the national, state, and local boards. Each level of the association provides you with different membership benefits. Get the most out of your dues investment by taking advantage of your REALTOR® benefits.

WHY IS RPAC INVESTMENT INCLUDED IN MY BILL?

Since 1969, the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) has promoted the election of pro-REALTOR® candidates across the United States. The purpose of RPAC is clear: voluntary contributions made by REALTORS® are used to help elect candidates who understand and support their interests. These are not members’ dues; this is money given freely by REALTORS® in recognition of the importance of the political process. The REALTORS® Political Action Committee and other political fundraising are the keys to protecting and promoting the real estate industry.

You can remove the RPAC contribution option from your bill before processing your payment if you choose not to contribute.

I AM CONSIDERING GOING INACTIVE AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. SUGGESTIONS?

If you no longer wish to be a HAR member, there are several non-member paths you can take to go inactive. You cannot call yourself a REALTOR® with any of the following options.

Option 1: Best for staying connected and earning referral income.

Limited Function Referral Office (LFRO)

    1. Keep your MT real estate license active with the Board of Realty Regulation and hung with a separate referral office (not the REALTOR® brokerage). Talk with your broker if they have a referral office established.
    2. Referral only – No buying/selling transactions
    3. All referrals go through your Designated Broker

Option 2: Best for taking a break from real estate with the option to return under your same BRR license number.

Going inactive with HAR and BRR

  1. No real estate activity
  2. Maintain continuing education credits
  3. Report CE each October to the Board of Realty Regulation (BRR) to maintain eligibility
  4. Reactivate your MT state real estate license within 2 years through the BRR in order to avoid license re-testing

Option 3: Best for keeping your real estate license but no longer a REALTOR®. *Only available for broker licensees.

  1. Keep your MT real estate broker license without being a REALTOR® member
  2. No access to MLS, forms, or REALTOR® benefits
  3. No dues, but no protections or resources
  4. Operating independently (Not affiliated with a REALTOR® associated brokerage)

Option 4: Best for when you are ready to retire from the real estate industry.

  1. No license.
  2. No CE
  3. No dues
  4. No obligations

Took a break but miss us already?
